Die Firma Berkely Energia Limited, mit Sitz in Perth West – Australien, die sich selbst als clean Energy Company darstellt, ist seit Herbst 2016 dabei, im spanischen Salamanca eine Open Pit Uranmine zu eröffnen. Alle nationalen und europäischen Genehmigungen wurden erteilt.

Während Managing Director Paul Atherley von einer sehr positiven Entwicklung im Uransektor ab 2018 ausgeht und sich über :
„EU foundet Infrastructure and low orerating Costs“ freuen kann, unterstützten einige hundert Menschen die Salamanca Antinuclear Collective und Stop Uranium Platform gegen Baumfällungen.

„Several generations of inhabitants of the region will miss the opportunity to enjoy a unique space, because, even if oaks are replanted, due to their slow growth it will take at least a century to leave the area as it has been until a mining company laid eyes on this corner of Salamanca.“ (Las Arribes al día, Mar. 5, 2017)

Trotz aller Schönfärbungen der Minenbetreiber und IAEA wir es auch hier massivsten Wasserverbrauch und Verschmutzung, Freisetzung von Radongas und durch Winderrosion radioaktiver Partikel betroffenes Land geben. Wenn die Hinterlassenschaften der Mine wie bei der Wismut in Sachsen und Thüringen dann auch wieder „EU foundet“ beseitigt werden (8 Mrd Euro Steuergelder), könnten die Investoren vielleicht sogar Geld verdienen. Dann könnten sich auch die Anlagen in Gronau und Lingen über das „new EU based uranium mining project“ und die „security of supply of natural uranium“ freuen, deren Genehmigungen ja explizit vom Deutschen Atomausstieg ausgenommen sind.
